On Monday, 14th of July the European Commission have issued the long-awaited Guidelines according to DSA Art. 28 (4) to assist providers of online platforms accessible to minors in putting in place appropriate and proportionate measures to ensure a high level of privacy, safety, and security of minors, on their service. The publication was preceded by an extensive consultation process that also included workshops with children and young people themselves. Our input to the consultation of the draft version can be found here.
As Vice-President of the European Commission, Henna Virkkunen emphasised on the occasion of the press conference on Monday, the Guidelines are meant to support a balanced approach of improving children’s safety online while at the same time ensuring their civil rights are neither infringed nor negatively affected by any measure implemented on online platforms for their protection.
