On 7 January 2025, Meta announced sweeping changes to its content moderation policies in the U.S. Among the most controversial decisions were the elimination of collaboration with third-party fact-checking providers in the U.S. and the global withdrawal of key guidelines against hate speech towards a “community-based” moderation. These changes have a particularly serious impact on marginalized groups such as women, people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community.
A new report published on June 16 by a coalition of civil society organizations UltraViolet, All Out and GLAAD documents the alarming rise of harmful content on Meta's platforms as a result of these decisions. The accompanying website makemetasafe.org provides additional resources and calls on Meta to immediately reverse its actions.
These findings emphasise the need for comprehensive internet platform regulation and clear platform provider responsibilities to protect vulnerable groups and uphold democratic standards.
