At the Global Age Assurance Standards Summit (GAASS), which took place from 8 to 12 April 2024, more than 700 stakeholders, including governments, regulators, international organisations, civil society, academia, industry and technical experts, came together to draft this communiqué. Recognising what has already been achieved and the challenges that exist, the experts at GAASS agreed on a final communiqué, which formulates the requirements and potential of age verification procedures as follows:
‘If age verification is used proportionately and effectively, it offers the opportunity to strengthen the fundamental rights of children in the digital age while protecting the anonymity and freedom of adults to access online products, content and services.’
