Ansicht: Unsere Rechte in der Digitalen Welt Kapitel 6: Rolle der Eltern

Children want their parents to supervise them in order to avert a range of dangers: from neglecting their schoolwork to more serious harm, such as the risk of being exposed to pornography or threatened by child molesters and other criminals.

Philippines, gender and age unknown: If a child does not have parental support when using social media or the internet, they may view inappropriate content, which can have an impact into adulthood.

Croatia, girl, 12: Sometimes children do things on the internet that they shouldn't, and their parents need to help them with that.

Philippines, gender and age unknown: We need guidance from our parents, but they shouldn't control us in everything we do.

However, children also point out that parents often lack the necessary digital skills to support them online.

Pakistan, gender and age unknown: Our parents and siblings do not support [our use of] digital technology because it involves many risks.

Kenya, boy, 15: I always want to keep up to date with movies and current affairs, but my parents don't let me sit in front of the screen for long.

Nepal, girl, 14: Sometimes our parents prevent us from using digital technology, and when we have to do project work and important research, we are not allowed to.

Croatia, boy, 12: Let me see educational content. It helps me.

Kenya, girl, 16: I want you to talk to our parents on our behalf and tell them that they should trust us when we use technology.

Most children say that parental restrictions are in their best interests and that it is the responsibility of parents to protect their children.

Pakistan, gender and age unknown: It is our parents' right to impose restrictions on us so that we go to bed on time and don't use the internet late at night.

Canada, girl, 11: Our parents have the right to tell us not to post personal information online.

Croatia, boy, 12: They should check my messages from time to time. They should know about all the people I come into contact with. They should check all the photos and everything we share on social media.

Pakistan, gender and age unknown: [My parents] tell me to express my political opinions, but not in a way that will cause unnecessary backlash.

Lebanon, girl, 17: [My parents] keep me from [making mistakes] and advise me on how to do the right thing... That's because parents love us.

Croatia, gender and age unknown: Do you know what your children are doing on the internet? No one knows your children as well as you do. Communicate with them and advise them so that no one can harm them.

Children from all over the world want their parents to be involved, but they feel that their parents are limited by a lack of knowledge and skills.

Kenya, boy, 15: Many parents and adults worry too much about their children's safety when they are exposed to technology. Well, I don't disagree with them, but I just want them to at least be aware that children are taught about technology in schools and know how to use it.
