    Children reported that the digital environment afforded them crucial opportunities for their voices to be heard in matters that affected them.

    The use of digital technologies can help to realize children’s participation at the local, national and international levels.

    Therefore, awareness of, and access to, digital means for children to express their views must be promoted and support for children must be offered.

Practical guide: Designing digital applications participatively with children and young people

The guide provides a hands-on introduction to the participatory design of digital applications with and for children and young people. It was jointly published by UNICEF Switzerland and Liechtenstein, the OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, and the University of Teacher Education Lucerne in 2023.

Time for children's rights

On the third day of the Internet Governance Forum in Kyoto, Japan, many events were focused on children's rights. Topics included how to develop technologies that promote the well-being of young people, how young people can get involved and participate in decision-making, and how their data can be protected and handled responsibly.

IGF 2023: Children’s and young people’s rights

The 18th Internet Governance Forum (IGF) meeting will be hosted by the Government of Japan in Kyoto in a hybrid format from 8 to 12 October 2023. We have put together a list of the sessions that will cover aspects of children and young people growing up in a digital environment.

This is a guide for children and young people from 12 to 17 years old to understand the main objectives of the Council of Europe Strategy for the Rights of the Child (2022-2027).

Enforcing children's rights in digital services

The BMDV has presented a bill for the implementation of the DSA and asked for comments. The Digital Opportunities Foundation welcomes the planned establishment of an independent authority for the enforcement of children's rights in digital services as well as the intended establishment of an advisory board to advise and accompany the work of the Digital Services Coordinator. This should include a children's rights representative. In addition, opportunities for participation that are lost in the future must be compensated for by new opportunities for participation.

The Better Internet for Kids (BIK) Map was created to compare and exchange knowledge on policy making and implementation in EU Member States on the themes and recommendations of the European Strategy for a Better Internet for Children. The fourth report of the series was released in May 2023.
